How to Create an Easy, Low-Cost DIY Jewelry Cleaner at Home

Keeping your jewelry looking shiny doesn’t require pricey cleaners or professional polishing. Over time, metals like silver naturally tarnish when exposed to air and moisture, but you can easily refresh them with a quick, at-home solution made from everyday items.

All you need are three simple ingredients: baking soda, salt, and liquid dish soap. Heat one cup of water until very hot, then stir in one tablespoon of each ingredient until fully dissolved. Line a small bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up, and pour in the mixture. Place the tarnished jewelry into the bowl, making sure it touches the foil and is completely covered by the solution.

After about five to ten minutes, the tarnish will begin to fade as a mild chemical reaction lifts it from the metal—no scrubbing required. Once finished, remove the pieces, rinse them with cool water, and gently dry with a soft cloth.

This quick and affordable method works well on sterling silver, gold-filled pieces, brass, and German silver. With just a few minutes and minimal cost, you can keep your favorite jewelry looking clean, bright, and well cared for.
