The Butcher, the Nails & the Tail-Gunner: Four Unexpected Twists That Will Leave You Laughing

When Joe’s wife left him and took his car, money, and even his best friend, he sank into such a deep depression that his doctor referred him to a psychiatrist.

Joe sat down looking completely defeated and explained everything that had happened. After finishing his story, he sighed and said, “Life just isn’t worth living anymore. I think I’m going to end it.”

The psychiatrist quickly tried to reassure him. “Don’t be foolish, Joe. My wife left me too, but I’m perfectly happy.”

Joe looked puzzled. “How did you manage that?”

“I buried myself in my work,” the psychiatrist explained. “I focused completely on my job and eventually forgot all about her. What kind of work do you do, Joe?”

Joe slowly raised his eyes and answered, “I clean septic tanks.”

The psychiatrist paused, suddenly reconsidering whether his advice had been quite as inspiring as he thought.

Thomas Merrick was determined to pay his way through medical school, so he spent the summer working two jobs. He was willing to work from early morning until late at night if it meant saving enough money.

During the day, Thomas worked at LeClaire’s Market, where he was employed as a butcher. He spent hours cutting meat, cleaning the shop, and moving heavy boxes into the freezer.

At night, he headed to St. Ambrose Hospital, where he worked as an orderly. There, his appearance and responsibilities were completely different. He wore clean scrubs and a white coat, helping nurses and patients during the overnight shift.

Thomas had become comfortable switching between his two very different worlds.

One night, shortly after midnight, he was asked to prepare an elderly woman in Room 216 for surgery. She was scheduled for an appendectomy.

Thomas calmly brought the gurney to her bedside and began helping the nurses prepare her for the trip to the operating room.

The woman slowly opened her eyes. She looked frail and confused at first.

Then she looked directly at Thomas.

Her expression suddenly changed from confusion to sheer terror.

Her eyes widened, her lips began to tremble, and she suddenly sat upright and screamed as though she had just seen something horrifying.

Lisa and Judy were volunteering on a Habitat for Humanity construction project. Lisa was working on the siding, repeatedly reaching into her nail pouch.

Whenever she pulled out a nail, she either hammered it into the wall or tossed it behind her.

After watching this happen several times, Judy became curious.

“Why are you throwing so many nails away?” she asked.

Lisa stopped working and examined one of the nails carefully.

“It seems like half of these are defective,” she explained. “The heads are on the wrong end, so I can’t use them.”

Judy stared at her, completely stunned.

Then she finally understood what was happening.

“You idiot!” she shouted. “Those nails aren’t defective! They’re meant for the other side of the house!”

A man told his co-worker that his company was transferring him to Chicago. Although the move came with a significant raise and better benefits, he was seriously considering turning it down.

His biggest concern was crime.

His co-worker encouraged him not to make such a quick decision. He described Chicago as a fascinating city filled with history, museums, famous landmarks, excellent transportation, and countless things to do.

“I worked there for nearly ten years,” he added, “and I never had a single problem with crime while I was on the job.”

The man immediately felt more reassured.

“Really? Maybe Chicago isn’t as dangerous as I thought. What kind of work did you do?”

His co-worker casually answered, “I was the tail-gunner on a bread truck.”

The man went silent.

Suddenly, his co-worker’s perfect crime-free record made a lot more sense.
