My Husband Turned Me Into His Prize—Until His Best Friend Exposed the Secret Wager He’d Been Making About Me

My husband, Mark, always told me how proud he was of me. In the beginning, I believed him. I thought the way he complimented my appearance was simply how a loving husband showed attraction. When he called me beautiful in front of other people, I even felt special.

But slowly, I began to realize that Mark wasn’t admiring me—he was putting me on display.

He preferred me in short skirts, tight dresses, and revealing tops. He seemed to enjoy walking into a room with me and watching his friends notice me, as though he wanted everyone to see what belonged to him. Whenever I chose something more modest, he accused me of hiding the things that made me attractive. If I told him I felt uncomfortable, he said I was just being insecure.

Eventually, I started asking myself whether he still saw me as his wife or simply as something he could show off.

I tried to convince myself it wasn’t a big deal. Maybe this was just Mark’s way of expressing how attracted he was to me. Maybe I was making too much of it.

Then came Tyler’s summer pool party.

Even before we left the house that afternoon, something about Mark’s behavior made me uneasy.

He picked up a tiny bikini and tossed it onto the bed.

“Wear this.”

I stared at it. “Mark, this is way too revealing.”

It wasn’t really about being shy. I felt exposed. Embarrassed. More than anything, I felt like an object.

At the party, the second I walked outside, I noticed people looking at me. Several men stared openly, while some women whispered behind their sunglasses. Mark wrapped his arm around me and smiled proudly, almost like he had brought a trophy to show everyone.

Every few minutes, he looked around to see who was watching.

That somehow made me feel even worse.

I tried to make myself smaller, but Mark kept pulling me toward him and telling me to relax. When I quietly asked if we could leave, he rolled his eyes.

“You’re ruining the afternoon,” he said.

I thought that was going to be the worst part of the day.

I was wrong.

While Mark was inside getting drinks, Tyler—the friend who had known him the longest—walked over to me. His expression was serious.

“You know he doesn’t treat you right, don’t you?”

I stared at him, confused.

Tyler lowered his voice.

“He makes bets about you.”

“What?”

“He bets the other guys on what he can convince you to wear and how long it will take before you get uncomfortable. The bikini today? That was part of it.”

For a few seconds, I couldn’t process what he was saying.

The music, laughter, and sounds of people in the pool seemed to disappear.

Suddenly, every uncomfortable memory came flooding back.

Every outfit Mark had pressured me to wear.

Every time I told him I felt exposed and he laughed it off.

Every time he looked around to see who was staring.

None of it had been innocent.

It had been a game to him.

Tyler continued, his voice filled with regret.

“He told everyone you would eventually give in because you always do.”

My stomach dropped.

Tyler looked away.

“I should have told you sooner. I’m sorry. But I couldn’t keep watching him do this to you.”

When Mark came back, he was smiling like everything was perfectly normal. He handed me a drink and casually asked why I looked so serious.

For the first time, I truly looked at him.

And I realized how little he actually understood me.

He knew how he wanted me to look. He knew how he wanted other people to see me. But he didn’t seem to care about what I wanted at all.

So I stood up.

I grabbed a towel, wrapped it around myself, and said, “We’re leaving.”

His smile disappeared.

At first, he laughed because he thought I was joking. But when he saw my expression, his attitude changed.

“What are you talking about?” he demanded.

I didn’t explain.

I simply walked away.

I heard Tyler say Mark’s name behind me, but I kept going.

Mark followed me toward the driveway, suddenly angry and desperate, telling me to stop and listen to him.

But I had spent years listening to him.

That night, I packed a bag.

Mark sent message after message, insisting Tyler had lied and accusing me of destroying our marriage over nothing.

Then came the apologies.

Then the promises.

And finally, the anger when I refused to come home.

But something inside me had already changed.

I knew I could never go back to being treated like someone’s trophy.

I’m staying with my sister now, and I’m speaking with a lawyer. I’ve saved Mark’s messages, including the ones where he tried to convince me that I was being dramatic. Tyler has also agreed to tell my lawyer everything he knows about the bets.

The strangest thing is that I’m not even angry about the bikini anymore.

I’m angry that I spent so many years believing that someone who claimed to love me could make me feel ashamed of my own body and then call it affection.

Mark keeps saying I’m throwing away our marriage because of “one stupid joke.”

But I can’t stop thinking about what Tyler told me.

It wasn’t one joke.

It was a game.

And somehow, I was the prize.

So now I have to ask myself:

Am I wrong for wanting to divorce him over this?
