Following reports that several athletes experienced minor damage to their medals during post-event celebrations, organizers of this year’s Winter Games have launched a review. Although earning a medal marks a career-defining accomplishment, a handful of competitors noticed that components of their awards—particularly the ribbon attachments—came loose shortly after the ceremonies. The incidents quickly gained attention online, prompting officials to examine the design.
American skier Breezy Johnson, who recently secured her first Olympic gold, shared that her medal detached from its ribbon while celebrating with teammates. She clarified that the issue appeared to involve a small fastening piece rather than structural damage to the medal itself. Johnson and fellow athletes approached the moment with humor, suggesting the medal simply couldn’t keep up with the excitement.
Athletes from other delegations, including Germany’s Justus Strelow and U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu, also posted lighthearted videos showing similar ribbon separations. The clips circulated widely on social media, with most competitors expressing pride in their achievements despite the minor mishap.
In response, event officials confirmed they are evaluating the medal assembly process and exploring adjustments to ensure durability. They emphasized that these awards symbolize years of training and sacrifice, and organizers want each medal to remain a lasting and secure representation of athletic excellence as the Games continue.
