My Strict Mother Threw Me Out After Discovering a Pregnancy Test—But What the Neighbors Told Her Changed Everything

My Strict Mother Threw Me Out After Finding a Pregnancy Test, but a Shocking Revelation from the Neighbors Changed Everything

I believe I should begin by explaining my childhood so you can understand what life was like growing up with my mother and sister.

Anyone who believes parents treat their children equally would have been shocked by the way my mother raised us. My father left before I was born, and Mom seemed to blame me for everything she believed he had done wrong.

She was extremely demanding. I was expected to excel in everything I did, and anything less than an A+ felt like a disaster.

“Theresa, is that really your best?” she would ask in her sharp, unforgiving voice.

My younger sister, Ann, was born after Mom married my stepfather, Roger. Ann received the gentle, affectionate version of our mother, while I experienced her strict and critical side.

The rules seemed to apply only to me. Even when Ann took money from Roger’s wallet and spent it on her irresponsible boyfriend, Mom excused her behavior.

“You know how teenagers are,” she would say casually.

In our home, my mistakes were punished, while Ann was treated like a perfect princess. Although this unfairness hurt me deeply as a child, I eventually learned to accept it and carry on.

Things began changing when I started planning a future of my own. Peter, my fiancé, accepted me exactly as I was. When he proposed, I felt as though I could finally breathe again.

We had recently graduated from college and were saving money to purchase a home, so we both moved back in with our parents temporarily.

Living under my mother’s roof again was difficult, but I reminded myself that it would not last forever.

Ann also lived with Mom. She had not attended college and worked different small jobs, yet Mom still considered her the daughter she had always wanted.

For Ann’s twenty-first birthday, she decided to host a celebration at home to avoid spending too much money. Mom spent the entire day preparing food, while Ann remained on the couch using her phone. I was expected to help cook and decorate as well.

“Why am I preparing everything for Ann’s birthday while she does nothing?” I asked, trying to remain calm.

“Because you’re the older sister,” Mom replied while chopping vegetables.

“Ann is an adult now. She can help too,” I argued.

Mom became furious. “Is helping really that difficult for you? You don’t do anything anyway!”

I clenched my teeth and quietly muttered that I worked full-time and handled nearly everything around the house.

“What did you say?” she demanded.

“Nothing,” I replied.

By evening, the house was packed with guests. Food covered the counters, music filled the rooms, and people were everywhere. Mom continued serving Ann and attending to her every need, while Ann laughed with her friends without helping at all.

I stepped outside and called Peter.

“I don’t know how much longer I can handle this,” I admitted, my voice trembling.

“Just hang in there a little longer. Soon, we’ll have our own home,” he reassured me.

“She acts like I don’t even exist,” I said. “She only notices me when she needs something.”

Peter couldn’t understand why Mom treated Ann and me so differently.

I explained that Mom believed Ann was special because she had been born during a marriage, while she often blamed my father for ruining her life.

Before I could say more, Mom suddenly screamed my name from inside the house.

“THERESA! COME HERE!”

I told Peter I would call him back and hurried inside.

Mom stood in the center of the living room, holding something in her hand. Her expression was filled with anger.

“What is it?” I asked.

“What is this?” she shouted, holding up a positive pregnancy test.

“A pregnancy test?” I replied, staring at it.

“Don’t act innocent! You’re so irresponsible!” she yelled.

“You think it belongs to me?” I asked.

“Who else could it belong to?” she demanded.

“The house is full of people. Why assume it’s mine?”

“Because I found it in your bedroom!” she shouted.

“Why were you searching my room?” I asked angrily.

“I’m your mother. I can enter your room whenever I want!”

I insisted that the test was not mine, but Mom refused to believe me.

“Don’t lie! I know what you and Peter have been doing!” she screamed.

The music stopped, and every guest turned to look at us.

“You’ve brought shame to this family by getting pregnant before marriage!” Mom shouted.

I reminded her that she, too, had become pregnant before marriage.

She responded with words that devastated me.

“I regret it every day! If I could go back, I would never have given birth to you. I wish you had never been born!”

Her words felt unbearable. She was saying she regretted having me.

“You have until tomorrow to leave this house!” she declared.

“Fine!” I shouted before rushing to my room.

Once the door closed, I collapsed onto the floor and began crying. I could not understand how a mother could speak to her own child that way.

I knew the pregnancy test was not mine, and at that point, I did not even care who it belonged to. I simply knew I could no longer remain in that house.

I texted Peter:

Can I move in with you?

He replied almost immediately:

Of course. Come over now.

I packed my belongings late into the night, taking only clothes, my old photo album, and a few books. By sunrise, I had arrived at Peter’s home.

He hugged me tightly and tried to comfort me.

“She isn’t worth your tears, Theresa,” he said.

Even though I nodded, I still felt hurt. I kept thinking about how differently Mom would have reacted if the test had belonged to Ann. She probably would have hugged her and promised that everything would be fine.

For me, there had only been anger, humiliation, and rejection.

Several weeks passed after I moved out, and I began feeling more peaceful. Without my mother constantly criticizing me, I felt as though I could finally breathe.

However, I needed to return to the house to collect a few belongings I had left behind.

When I arrived, I saw Mom standing near the neighbor’s fence. She was watching the property next door, where loud voices could be heard.

Our neighbors, Earl and Mary, were having a serious argument.

“You cheated on me!” Mary screamed.

“Please lower your voice. Someone might hear us,” Earl responded nervously.

“That’s what concerns you? Someone finding out? Not the fact that you betrayed me and destroyed our marriage?”

Earl began saying something about her family finding out, but Mary interrupted him.

“I’m going to tell them everything myself! I’m finished protecting you!”

I looked toward Mom, who was watching the argument with a tense expression.

“What’s happening?” I asked.

“Earl must have cheated on Mary,” Mom replied. Then she noticed me and immediately became hostile.

“Why are you here? I don’t want to see you or the child you’re carrying!” she shouted.

“I’ve already told you that the test wasn’t mine. I’m not pregnant! I only came to collect my things,” I replied.

“Then go inside and make it quick. What a disgrace!” she said.

Before I could move, Mary stormed onto our property.

“Sandra!” she yelled at Mom. “I need to speak to you about your irresponsible daughter!”

Mom immediately covered her mouth.

“Was Theresa the woman Earl cheated with?” she asked.

Mary stared at her and replied, “It’s worse than that. She’s pregnant!”

Mom turned toward me in disbelief.

“Theresa, how could you sink so low? Being pregnant before marriage is bad enough, but having a child with a married man is unforgivable!”

Mary looked confused.

“What does Theresa have to do with any of this?” she asked.

Mom pointed toward me, but Mary clarified the truth.

“I’m talking about Ann!” Mary shouted.

Mom froze.

“Ann?”

“Yes! Your daughter had an affair with a married man nearly fifteen years older than her, and now she’s pregnant with his child!”

Mom refused to believe it.

“My Ann couldn’t have done that,” she insisted.

“Earl told me everything himself!” Mary answered.

I stood there listening as the truth finally came out. Although I kept my expression calm, I felt a deep sense of relief. For years, Ann had been treated as though she could do no wrong, while I was blamed for everything.

I collected my remaining belongings and headed toward my car.

“Looks like Ann isn’t so perfect after all,” I told Mom.

“I’m sure she had her reasons!” Mom called back desperately.

“Of course,” I replied with a slight smile before getting into the car.

As I drove away, I felt freer than ever, as though I had finally escaped my mother’s shadow.

Eventually, Mom, Ann, and Roger moved to another state. Mom had always been deeply concerned about other people’s opinions, and the gossip and judgment became too difficult for her to handle.

I heard they settled in a distant small town where nobody knew their history.

Peter and I eventually purchased the house from them. They sold it for an unusually low price because they were eager to leave as quickly as possible.

That was the last time I saw my family. This time, I drove away without looking back.
