Sylvester Stallone knows the pain of losing a child better than most. In 2012, the Hollywood star suffered the devastating loss of his firstborn son, Sage Stallone, who died at just 36 years old.

What many people may not know is that, only weeks before Sage’s death, his mother, Sasha Czack, had urged him not to undergo extensive dental surgery.

At the time, Sage’s sudden death led to widespread speculation. Some wondered whether drugs, alcohol, or even suicide had played a role.

But the eventual findings told a very different story.

A Difficult Beginning

Stallone’s life had already been filled with hardship long before he became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

He was born with an injury to a facial nerve caused by complications during delivery. The injury left part of his face partially paralyzed and contributed to the distinctive expression that later became one of his trademarks.

As a child, Stallone was bullied because of his appearance. He later recalled feeling as though his facial features were out of place.

His childhood home wasn’t an easy refuge either. Stallone has spoken publicly about having an abusive father and a distant relationship with his mother.

His behavior became increasingly troubled as he grew older. By the time he was a teenager, he had reportedly been expelled from numerous schools and frequently found himself in dangerous situations.

Eventually, he discovered bodybuilding and acting.

Before fame arrived, however, Stallone struggled financially. He has described periods when he was so poor that he had nowhere to live and slept at New York’s Port Authority.

He once recalled having only one coat to protect him through the winter.

Then everything changed.

In 1976, Stallone starred in the original Rocky, launching the career that would turn him into an international star.

His First Family

Before reaching the height of his fame, Stallone married photographer and filmmaker Sasha Czack.

The couple had two sons.

Their first child, Sage, was born in 1976. Their second son, Seargeoh, arrived in 1979.

Stallone and Czack eventually divorced in 1985.

Stallone later married Brigitte Nielsen, but that marriage lasted only two years.

In 1997, he married Jennifer Flavin. Together they went on to have three daughters: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet.

Despite the changes in his personal life, the loss of Sage would remain one of the deepest tragedies Stallone ever experienced.

Sage Stallone’s Sudden Death

Sage followed some of his father’s footsteps into the entertainment world.

He appeared alongside Stallone in films including Rocky V and Daylight. He was also passionate about classic movies and eventually founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to restoring and preserving older films.

On July 13, 2012, Sage was found dead in his Los Angeles-area apartment by his housekeeper.

News of his death immediately sparked speculation.

Some reports questioned how long he had been dead before he was discovered. Other rumors focused on bottles found inside his apartment, with some people suggesting that alcohol or drugs could have been involved.

However, Sage’s longtime friend and attorney, George Braunstein, rejected those theories.

Braunstein said Sage did not drink alcohol and had no known history of drug abuse. He described him as young, creative, energetic, and full of life.

Another theory suggested suicide, but investigators found no suicide note. At the time of his death, Sage was also reportedly preparing to marry his longtime girlfriend.

As the investigation continued, the family asked the public to respect their privacy.

Stallone himself pleaded with people not to turn his son’s death into speculation.

He described Sage as his first child and emphasized how deeply important his son had been to him and the rest of the family.

The Warning From His Mother

Eventually, another detail about Sage’s final weeks came to light.

According to his mother, Sasha Czack, Sage had undergone extensive dental work approximately two weeks before his death.

Czack said she had warned him against having multiple teeth removed during the same procedure.

She was concerned about the risks and specifically told him not to have several teeth pulled at once.

Despite her concerns, Sage reportedly had five teeth removed.

Afterward, he took prescription pain medication to deal with the discomfort.

Two weeks later, he died.

The timing led to additional questions, but the later medical findings provided the answer.

What the Autopsy Revealed

In August 2012, the Los Angeles County coroner’s findings were released.

The autopsy concluded that Sage had died from atherosclerosis, a condition involving the hardening and narrowing of the arteries.

The condition caused a heart attack.

Toxicology testing did find pain medication in his system, but investigators determined that there had been no overdose.

The findings therefore contradicted many of the rumors that had circulated immediately after his death.

Sage’s death was ultimately attributed to natural disease rather than drugs, alcohol, or suicide.

A Father’s Grief

For Stallone, the uncertainty surrounding his son’s death made an already devastating situation even harder.

While waiting for the final medical findings, he publicly asked people to remember Sage with compassion rather than speculation.

He also expressed sympathy for Sage’s mother, Sasha, emphasizing that the loss of a child is a pain that remains with a parent for the rest of their life.

Stallone eventually returned to work, partly as a way of coping with his grief and keeping himself occupied.

More than a decade later, Sage’s death remains one of the darkest chapters in Stallone’s life.

His younger brother, Seargeoh, has largely stayed away from the public spotlight, while Stallone’s three daughters have grown up in a much more visible Hollywood family.

For Stallone, however, the memory of his firstborn son remains an enduring part of his life and family history.
