My parents came to stay with us for the weekend. One evening, while searching the bathroom cabinet for some aspirin, my dad noticed a bottle of prescription medication.
He brought it into the kitchen and asked, “What are these?”
I nearly spit out my coffee. I explained what the medication was and quickly warned him, “Dad, you shouldn’t take any prescription medicine that hasn’t been prescribed to you. You need to talk to your doctor first.”
He waved away my concern and asked, “How much does one cost?”
“About ten dollars per pill,” I told him.
He thought about it for a moment before saying, “I still want one. I’ll leave the money under my pillow before we leave.”
I assumed he was joking, so I changed the subject.
The following morning, after my parents headed home, I went into the guest room to straighten everything up. When I lifted the pillow, I froze.
There was cash underneath it.
But it wasn’t $10.
It was $110.
Confused, I called my dad immediately.
“Dad, I told you one pill costs ten dollars. Why did you leave $110?”
There was a brief pause.
Then he started laughing.
“I know exactly how much it costs,” he said.
I stared at the money.
“Then why did you leave $110?”
His voice dropped as though he were revealing a secret.
“The ten dollars was from me.”
I waited for him to explain the other hundred dollars.
Instead, he burst out laughing again.
“That was from your mother!”
Before I could even respond, I heard my mom shouting in the background:
“STOP TELLING HIM OUR BUSINESS!”
My dad continued laughing, clearly enjoying the whole situation far more than I was.
I decided not to ask any more questions.
From that weekend on, I also made sure prescription medications were kept safely out of sight whenever we had visitors.
Some family moments are funny enough to become stories you tell for years. Others are better left unexplained.
For our family, the mysterious $110 under Dad’s pillow became one of those stories nobody ever forgot.
