What scientific research says about how unsweetened coffee affects the brain and body

A study from Johns Hopkins University, published in Nature Neuroscience, explored how drinking black coffee affects the body. Researchers found that its effects go beyond caffeine’s typical stimulation, linking consumption to cellular protection and changes in brain activity.

Specifically, the study showed that unsweetened coffee impacts the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Regular, moderate consumption appears to strengthen connections between neurons, potentially enhancing attention, memory consolidation, and overall cognitive performance.

From a metabolic perspective, black coffee may support weight management. The study highlights two key mechanisms: it increases thermogenesis (how the body produces heat from calories) and raises the basal metabolic rate, helping the body process nutrients more efficiently. When paired with a balanced diet and exercise, these effects could contribute to weight control. Coffee beans are packed with antioxidants, which help protect tissues by reducing oxidative damage. Research also indicates that moderate black coffee consumption may support circulatory health, being linked to a lower risk of arterial blockages and heart disease. These qualities suggest that unsweetened coffee can be beneficial for overall vascular wellness.

An often-overlooked advantage is its potential impact on oral health: drinking coffee without sugar may help limit the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. However, experts caution that adding sugar or artificial sweeteners cancels out this benefit and can promote enamel erosion, making unsweetened coffee the healthier choice.

The researchers stress that these benefits are most notable with moderate intake and warn against excessive caffeine consumption. They also note that the type and preparation of coffee—such as ground versus instant—can affect its chemical profile and health effects. For the best results, they recommend choosing coffee from diverse origins and using traditional brewing methods whenever possible.
