House Speaker Mike Johnson raised serious concerns about the safety of President Donald Trump after a shooting occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday night.

In an interview on Fox News, Johnson called for a review of security measures, pointing out that there have been previous assassination attempts targeting Trump since 2024.

Describing the incident, Johnson said the experience felt surreal. He explained that he was standing on a raised platform taking photos when the situation suddenly turned chaotic. He didn’t initially hear gunshots, but his security team quickly reacted—some shielding him and guiding him to the nearest exit, while others rushed to safely escort his wife. They reunited shortly after and were taken to their motorcade, where they waited as the situation unfolded.

Johnson later spoke with Trump and praised his response following the incident, describing it as appropriate and unifying. He emphasized that the event should serve as a wake-up call for the country, urging people to come together and acknowledge the seriousness of current security threats.

During the interview, Johnson was asked about comments from Senator John Fetterman, who had called for improved security and a more suitable venue for such high-level events. Johnson described Fetterman as an uncommon voice among Democrats and said more leaders should adopt a similar tone.

However, Johnson also criticized other Democratic figures, claiming that some of their rhetoric has contributed to rising tensions. In his view, strong and aggressive language can influence unstable individuals and potentially lead to violence, especially when amplified online.

He stressed the need to lower political tensions and avoid inflammatory language. Johnson also supported the idea of building a more secure White House ballroom, noting it could provide a safer setting for future events, with enhanced protection features compared to hotel venues.
