For years, many people have followed the familiar advice to drink eight glasses of water a day. But according to health experts, hydration is far more individualized than that simple guideline suggests. While water is essential for energy, digestion, body temperature, and overall wellness, experts say there is no single amount that works perfectly for everyone.

The popular “8×8 rule” — drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily — became widely accepted because it’s easy to remember. However, researchers note that there is limited scientific evidence proving that every person needs exactly that amount each day. Hydration needs can vary greatly depending on age, activity level, climate, diet, and overall health.

Another important factor many people overlook is that the body gets fluids from more than just plain water. Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, lettuce, soups, and even beverages such as tea can contribute significantly to daily hydration. Because of this, experts encourage people to focus less on hitting a strict number and more on maintaining steady hydration throughout the day.

Instead of forcing yourself to drink large amounts at once, many nutritionists recommend building simple habits that make hydration feel natural. Drinking water after waking up, with meals, or after exercise can help maintain balance without turning hydration into a chore. Carrying a reusable water bottle and responding to feelings of thirst are also considered effective strategies.

Hydration needs can increase in certain situations. Hot weather, physical activity, illness, pregnancy, and heavy sweating may require higher fluid intake. At the same time, experts warn that excessive water consumption in a short period can also be harmful. Drinking too much too quickly may lead to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia, where sodium levels in the body become too diluted.

Doctors often suggest paying attention to simple signs rather than obsessively counting glasses. Pale yellow urine, stable energy levels, healthy skin, and minimal thirst are generally signs of proper hydration. Symptoms like dark urine, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, or dry mouth may indicate dehydration.

Ultimately, experts say the healthiest approach is one that fits naturally into your lifestyle. Staying hydrated is important, but it does not have to follow a rigid formula. Listening to your body, eating water-rich foods, and maintaining consistent daily habits are often more beneficial than focusing strictly on a specific number of glasses each day.
