Health authorities investigating a rare and deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius now believe they may be closer to understanding how the infection began. The outbreak, which resulted in multiple deaths and widespread concern among passengers, has prompted an international investigation involving Argentine health officials, maritime authorities, and global disease experts.

According to early findings reported by Argentine investigators, the origin of the outbreak may be linked to a birdwatching excursion taken in Ushuaia, located in the southernmost region of Argentina. Authorities suspect that several passengers may have been exposed to the virus during a visit to a landfill site outside the city, an area known for high rodent activity. This location is now considered a possible starting point for the chain of infections that later spread onboard the ship.

Officials believe that a Dutch couple who participated in the excursion may have been among the first to contract the virus. Investigators suggest that the couple could have unknowingly carried the infection back to the vessel, where it subsequently spread in the close-contact environment of the cruise. Because hantavirus can be transmitted through exposure to rodent droppings, urine, saliva, or contaminated dust particles, even brief exposure in a high-risk environment may be enough to trigger infection.

Once onboard, the situation escalated quickly. Reports confirm that three passengers ultimately died during the voyage, which was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde. As concerns grew about potential further spread, more than 150 passengers and crew members were left stranded off the coast of Cape Verde while health authorities assessed the situation and attempted to contain any additional risk of transmission. The ship has since been cleared to dock in the Canary Islands under strict health supervision.

Laboratory testing confirmed that the infections were caused by the rare “Andes” strain of hantavirus. Enclosed spaces, poor sanitation, and areas with high rodent populations can all contribute to increased exposure. World Health Organization epidemiologist Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove addressed the situation in a recent press briefing, emphasizing that while the outbreak is serious, it should not be compared directly to a global pandemic like COVID-19. “This is not the next Covid,” she stated, according to ABC News. “But it is a serious infectious disease. If people get infected, and infections are uncommon, they can die. People on the ship who are hearing this are very scared, rightly so.”

Her comments reflect the delicate balance health authorities must maintain—acknowledging the seriousness of the outbreak while avoiding unnecessary public panic. At the same time, officials are urging caution, rapid diagnosis, and careful monitoring of anyone who may have been exposed.
