My Ex Became My Boss at the Worst Possible Moment

I walked into what I thought would be a completely normal job interview, expecting nervous questions, polite smiles, and the usual routine of introducing myself and proving why I was the right fit for the role. Instead, the moment I stepped into the room, everything in me froze.

Sitting behind the desk was my ex-boyfriend.

For a second, I honestly thought my mind was playing tricks on me. It had been years since our breakup, but the memory of how it ended came rushing back instantly—messy, emotional, and far from clean. And now, here he was, calm and composed, sitting in the exact position of authority while I stood there trying to pretend my heart hadn’t just dropped into my stomach.

The faint smirk on his face told me everything I needed to know. He recognized me immediately. Worse, it looked like he had been waiting for this moment.

He didn’t even try to hide his reaction. As he began flipping through my resume, his tone was professional on the surface, but every question carried a subtle edge, as if he was testing not just my qualifications, but my composure. I could feel the weight of the past pressing into the present, threatening to undo years of growth I had fought hard for.

At one point, he leaned back in his chair and asked if I would truly be comfortable working in a place where “personal history” might exist. The implication was clear, and for a split second, I felt the old tension rise again. But I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me shaken.

I kept my voice steady. I told him clearly that whatever had happened between us belonged in the past, and that I was fully capable of separating personal emotions from professional responsibilities. Saying it out loud almost made it feel more real, like I was reminding myself as much as I was convincing him.

The interview continued, but the atmosphere never fully recovered. Every question felt layered with unspoken history, every pause filled with memories I would have preferred to leave buried.

Then, just as I was about to leave, he surprised me again. He told me I would be considered for a trial period, as if nothing unusual had just happened. And then, almost casually, as I reached the door, he added that he was single now.

That single comment lingered far longer than anything else he had said.

It wasn’t part of the interview. It wasn’t professional. It felt intentional—like a reminder of something unfinished, or maybe a new complication I hadn’t signed up for.

Now I’m left standing at a crossroads, replaying every moment in my head. Do I take the job and prove that I can handle working under someone who once meant something personal to me? Or do I walk away and protect myself from reopening a chapter I thought was already closed?

What started as a simple career opportunity has suddenly turned into something much more complicated. And the worst part is, I can’t tell whether this is a test of my professionalism… or a test of how much of my past I’m really ready to face again.
