The checkout lines moved steadily, filled with the familiar sounds of barcodes beeping, shopping bags rustling, and quiet conversations between cashiers and customers.

Then I noticed a young girl standing near the register holding a small birthday cake carefully in both hands. She couldn’t have been older than ten or eleven. The cake wasn’t fancy—just a simple one with colorful frosting and a few decorations around the edges—but the way she held it made it feel important.

When the cashier finished ringing up her items, the girl quietly counted the money in her hand. Her face changed almost instantly.
