Sleeping on Your Right Side Every Night May Have Unexpected Effects

Many people never think twice about the side they sleep on each night. But according to doctors and sleep specialists, consistently sleeping on your right side may affect certain aspects of health and comfort more than people realize.

For some individuals, the effects are minor. For others — especially those with existing medical conditions — sleeping position can influence digestion, circulation, pain levels, and overall sleep quality.

One of the most researched concerns linked to right-side sleeping involves acid reflux and heartburn.

The stomach naturally sits slightly toward the left side of the body. When someone lies on their right side, gravity can position stomach acid closer to the esophagus, increasing the chance of acid flowing backward. In people with GERD or frequent heartburn, this may lead to more nighttime reflux symptoms and discomfort.

Studies published in gastrointestinal research journals have found that right-side sleeping may increase acid exposure in the esophagus compared to sleeping on the left side. Many doctors therefore recommend left-side sleeping for people who regularly experience reflux.

Those most likely to notice this effect include:
People with GERD
Frequent heartburn sufferers
Individuals with hiatal hernias
Anyone eating large meals close to bedtime

Experts often suggest avoiding food several hours before sleep and slightly elevating the head of the bed to reduce symptoms.

Right-side sleeping may also contribute to discomfort for some people with gallbladder issues.

Because the gallbladder sits on the right side of the abdomen, certain sleep positions may increase pressure or movement around the area. Some people with gallstones report worsening pain or discomfort after sleeping on their right side, although large scientific studies on this are still limited.

Doctors say individuals with known gallbladder disease should pay attention to whether certain sleeping positions seem to trigger symptoms more frequently.

Another topic often discussed online involves the liver.

The liver is located primarily on the right side of the body, and some internet claims suggest sleeping on the right side harms liver function. However, medical experts say there is little evidence showing that right-side sleeping negatively affects a healthy liver.

For most healthy individuals, the liver is not a concern.

Only people with severe liver disease or enlarged livers may need to discuss sleep positioning with their doctors.

Heart-related concerns also generate confusion.

Some people notice stronger heartbeat sensations or mild palpitations depending on which side they sleep on. Interestingly, many individuals actually feel more noticeable heartbeats while lying on the left side because the heart shifts slightly closer to the chest wall.

For most healthy people, neither side poses significant danger. However, individuals with serious heart conditions should follow personalized medical advice from their physicians.

Right-side sleeping can also create more physical pressure on the shoulder and arm beneath the body.

Over time, this may contribute to:
Shoulder stiffness
Neck pain
Numbness or tingling in the hands
Compressed nerves
Worsening of existing shoulder injuries

People who sleep with their arm tucked under their head or body are especially prone to waking up with “pins and needles” sensations or soreness.

Using supportive pillows and maintaining proper neck alignment may help reduce these issues.

There are even cosmetic effects linked to side sleeping.

Dermatologists note that pressing one side of the face into a pillow night after night may contribute to “sleep lines” and facial wrinkles over time. Side sleepers often develop slightly more visible creasing on the side they sleep on most frequently.

Some people use silk pillowcases or specialized pillows to reduce friction and pressure on the skin.

Despite these possible concerns, experts stress that there is no single perfect sleeping position for everyone.

Left-side sleeping may benefit people with reflux and pregnant women because it can improve circulation and reduce pressure on certain blood vessels. However, some people simply sleep more comfortably on their right side, and comfort remains an important part of quality rest.

Pregnancy is one situation where sleep position becomes especially important.

During the later stages of pregnancy, doctors often recommend sleeping on the left side because it may improve blood flow to the placenta and reduce pressure on major veins returning blood to the heart.

Still, experts emphasize that occasional movement during sleep is completely normal.

Ultimately, the best sleeping position depends on a person’s body, comfort, and medical conditions.

Most people do not need to panic about sleeping on their right side. But if someone notices worsening reflux, pain, numbness, or other recurring symptoms, adjusting sleep position may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Sometimes small habits repeated every night can quietly influence health more than we realize.
