9 Household Devices You Should Never Plug Into a Power Strip Because of Serious Safety and Fire Risks

Many people use power strips every day without realizing that certain household devices can place too much strain on them. While power strips are convenient for smaller electronics, experts warn that some high-powered appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet to help reduce overheating and electrical risks.

Refrigerators are one example because they constantly cycle on and off throughout the day, requiring steady power that many standard strips aren’t designed to handle long term.

Microwaves and air conditioners also draw a large amount of electricity, especially when starting up, which can overload lower-quality strips or extension setups.

Space heaters are considered one of the biggest concerns. Because they generate high heat and consume significant power, safety experts recommend plugging them directly into a dedicated wall outlet whenever possible.

Kitchen appliances like toasters, toaster ovens, and coffee makers may seem harmless, but their heating elements use a surprisingly high amount of electricity and can place extra stress on shared power strips.

Hair dryers, curling irons, and other styling tools are also known for their high wattage and should be used carefully with proper outlets instead of overloaded adapters.

Another common mistake is plugging one power strip into another, sometimes called “daisy chaining.” This setup can increase the risk of overheating and electrical failure if too many devices are connected at once.

Heavy-duty equipment such as sump pumps and power tools also typically require stable, direct power sources to operate safely and reliably.

Electrical safety professionals recommend checking wattage limits, avoiding overloaded outlets, and using certified surge protectors properly to help keep homes safer and reduce unnecessary electrical hazards.
