U.S. Officials Say Peace Deal With Iran May Be Closer Than Ever

A senior U.S. administration official on Friday outlined key components of a possible short-term agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a potential pathway toward broader negotiations aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries.

Speaking with reporters, the official said the proposed framework would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending U.S. naval restrictions in the region, dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, transferring Iran’s enriched nuclear material to the United States for disposal, and establishing a robust inspection system designed to verify long-term compliance.

If finalized, the proposal would represent a significant departure from the nuclear agreement negotiated during the Obama administration and later withdrawn from by President Trump during his first term.

According to administration officials, Iran would be eligible for economic benefits if it successfully fulfills its commitments under the agreement. However, officials emphasized that no sanctions relief or financial incentives would be granted in advance.

Instead, any economic rewards would come only after Iran demonstrates compliance with the deal’s requirements. Officials noted that meeting those obligations could eventually reduce the country’s economic burdens and support its reintegration into the global economy.

The administration stressed that economic incentives would be tied directly to verified compliance, ensuring that benefits are earned only after agreed-upon conditions are met.
