8 Behaviors That May Show Your Cat Feels Safe and Happy Around You

8 Signs Your Cat Truly Loves You (Not Just Tolerates You)

Bringing home a new cat is exciting, but building a strong bond takes time. Unlike dogs, cats often show affection in subtle ways, making it difficult to know how they really feel. The good news is that cats have their own unique ways of expressing trust and affection. Once you know what to look for, their behavior becomes much easier to understand.

If your cat seems distant, don’t worry. Many cats need weeks—or even months—to fully settle into a new home and develop a close relationship with their owner. Patience, consistency, and gentle interactions can make a big difference. Here are eight common signs your cat genuinely enjoys your company.

1. They Knead Around You

When your cat rhythmically presses their paws against a blanket, pillow, or even your lap, they’re “kneading.” This comforting behavior often means they feel relaxed, safe, and content. If your cat kneads while sitting with you, it’s a strong sign they trust you.

2. They Bring You Little Gifts

Cats sometimes present toys, feathers, or, for outdoor cats, even small animals. While it may not seem like the ideal gift, this behavior is often considered a sign of affection and sharing.

3. They Choose to Sleep Near You

Cats sleep where they feel safest. If your cat curls up beside you, sleeps on your bed, or naps nearby, it usually means they feel secure and comfortable in your presence.

4. They Seek Out Physical Contact

A cat that rubs against your legs, bumps you with their head, curls up beside you, or gives you slow blinks is often showing affection. Slow blinking, in particular, is widely recognized as a sign of trust and relaxation.

5. They Groom You

If your cat licks your hands, hair, or face, they’re treating you like part of their family. Grooming is a social behavior cats often reserve for those they trust the most.

6. They Purr Around You

Although cats can purr for different reasons, a relaxed cat that purrs while being petted or sitting close to you is usually expressing comfort, contentment, and happiness.

7. They Show You Their Belly

A cat exposing its belly is displaying one of its most vulnerable areas. While it isn’t always an invitation for belly rubs, it often means your cat feels completely safe around you.

8. They Follow You Around the House

If your cat seems to appear wherever you go—even when food isn’t involved—it likely enjoys your company. Following you from room to room is often a sign that they want to stay close to someone they trust.

Every cat has a unique personality, and some show affection more openly than others. Building a close relationship takes time, patience, and respect for your cat’s boundaries. If your feline friend displays several of these behaviors, there’s a good chance you’ve earned a special place in their world.
