Scientists Confirm the Exact Year Vikings Reached North America

For generations, historians believed the Vikings reached North America centuries before Christopher Columbus, but the exact timing remained uncertain. Now, researchers have identified the precise year they were present, providing one of the clearest pieces of evidence yet about early European exploration of the continent.

The breakthrough comes from L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada—the only widely accepted Viking settlement ever discovered in North America. Using advanced scientific techniques, researchers determined that Vikings were living there in 1021 AD, almost 500 years before Columbus’s 1492 voyage.

Rather than relying on historical accounts alone, scientists examined ancient wooden artifacts uncovered at the site. The wood showed clear signs of being cut with metal tools, something Indigenous communities in the area were not using at that time, strongly linking the artifacts to Norse settlers.

To pinpoint the date, researchers looked for evidence of a rare solar storm, known as a Miyake event, which occurred around 992–993 AD. These powerful solar events leave a distinctive increase in radioactive carbon within tree rings around the world.

The team discovered this unique carbon signature in the wood samples and counted 29 growth rings from the solar event to the tree’s outer edge. That calculation revealed the trees were cut in 1021 AD, making it the earliest scientifically confirmed date for a European presence in the Americas.

Before this discovery, historians mainly relied on the Icelandic Sagas—medieval stories written centuries after the events they describe. Those accounts tell of Viking voyages led by Leif Erikson, encounters with Indigenous peoples, and the establishment of a settlement known as Vinland. While the sagas have long been debated, the new findings provide strong scientific evidence that supports key parts of those historical narratives.

Researchers believe the Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows may have been occupied for only a short period, possibly around a decade, before the explorers returned to Greenland. Even so, the site represents one of history’s most remarkable voyages, proving that Europeans crossed the Atlantic long before Columbus.

Although many questions remain—such as how far the Vikings traveled beyond Newfoundland and how extensive their interactions with Indigenous communities were—the study offers a major milestone in understanding early exploration. Scientists also believe the same dating technique could help solve other archaeological mysteries around the world, shedding new light on humanity’s past.
