Former Climate.gov Staff Create Independent Site to Protect Climate Data

After the closure of the federal Climate.gov website, a group of former NOAA employees has introduced a new independent platform aimed at preserving public access to climate information.

The initiative, led by former Climate.gov program manager Rebecca Lindsey, resulted in the creation of Climate.us, a nonprofit website that restores much of the material previously available through the government portal. The platform includes more than 15 years of climate records, weather data, climate indicators, and the Fifth National Climate Assessment.

Climate.gov was largely discontinued in 2025 after staffing reductions at NOAA during the Trump administration led to the site’s operations being scaled back and its pages redirected. In response, former employees and volunteer scientists collaborated to rebuild the resource outside of the federal system.

The project was supported by donations from individuals and underwent scientific review by dozens of experts to help ensure the information remains accurate and reliable.

According to the team behind the effort, the primary objective of Climate.us is to provide continued public access to climate data regardless of future political or administrative changes. Users who previously relied on Climate.gov are expected to receive updates informing them that many of the resources are once again available through the new platform.

The launch of Climate.us has drawn attention from supporters who view it as an important step toward preserving scientific information. At the same time, it has renewed discussion about federal workforce reductions, government data access, and the long-term availability of public scientific resources.
