George W. Bush and Barack Obama Emphasize Friendship While Subtly Referencing Political Differences With Trump

Former President George W. Bush recently looked back on one of his most widely shared public moments with former First Lady Michelle Obama, highlighting the unexpected friendship they have developed despite belonging to different political parties.

The 79-year-old former Republican president discussed the relationship during a conversation with his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, a co-host of NBC’s Today show. Their discussion was part of “History Talks,” an event organized by the History Channel to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

On Saturday, April 18, Bush Hager, 44, spoke with all four living former presidents in Philadelphia. The conversations explored their experiences in the White House and their hopes and messages for the country as it prepares to mark its semiquincentennial, according to People magazine.

During her interview with her father, which aired on Today on Tuesday, April 21, Bush reflected on his friendship with Michelle Obama. He recalled a lighthearted interaction at the 2018 funeral of the late Senator John McCain, when cameras recorded him appearing to hand Obama a small piece of candy.

Bush explained that he sometimes becomes restless during formal events and happened to be seated next to Michelle, whom he jokingly referred to as his usual companion at funerals. While sitting beside her, he decided to offer her an Altoid.

“I get a little antsy, as I’m sure you know, and I was sitting next to Michelle. That’s who I sit next to at funerals,” Bush said. He explained that he had been joking around with her before quietly giving her the mint, adding that he was not trying to make a joke and simply thought she might want one.

After the funeral, Bush said he got into his car and was told by his daughter that he was “trending.” At the time, he admitted he did not understand what the term meant.

Reflecting on the public response, Bush suggested that the moment attracted attention because people rarely saw individuals from opposite political and racial backgrounds interacting so comfortably.

He described the public’s reaction as evidence that Americans wanted to see a white, center-right Republican and an African American, center-left Democrat enjoying each other’s company and speaking as ordinary citizens rather than simply as political figures. Bush also said he planned to continue encouraging this kind of interaction.

In a 2021 interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Bush acknowledged that he had been surprised by how much attention the moment received. He said he was struck by the fact that so many Americans seemed surprised that he and Michelle Obama could be friends.

Michelle Obama had previously discussed their friendship in a 2019 conversation with Jenna Bush Hager. She explained that political disagreements did not prevent people from recognizing common values and treating each other with humanity.

Although she and Bush did not always agree on policy, Obama emphasized that they shared broader principles involving compassion, love, and respect. She also suggested that people often lose sight of these commonalities because they become focused on their fears and differences.

Their friendship continued to receive attention following the death of former President George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush’s father, in late 2018. Michelle Obama canceled two planned appearances on her Becoming book tour to attend his funeral in Washington, D.C.

According to the account, the event helped establish a recurring tradition in which George W. Bush would hand Michelle Obama a piece of candy during gatherings involving former presidents and first ladies.

Earlier that same year, Michelle Obama spoke warmly about Bush during an appearance on Today. She described him as her “partner in crime” at major events where former presidents and their families come together. She explained that they frequently found themselves attending the same occasions and said she loved him dearly.

Obama also used their friendship to emphasize that differences in political party, race, and gender do not necessarily prevent people from forming meaningful relationships. In her view, the example they set conveyed a message about the importance of human connection beyond political divisions.

However, the relationship between former presidents and their political histories has also attracted attention. During Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, he repeatedly criticized George W. Bush’s administration, particularly its economic policies and foreign policy record.
