While they were dating, Aaron had been thoughtful, hardworking, and affectionate. He used to wake Olivia every morning with coffee, a hug, and a silly joke. But after their wedding, things slowly changed.

Aaron began spending more time playing video games and less time helping around the house. He stopped making an effort and seemed perfectly comfortable letting Olivia handle most of their responsibilities.

“Oh, that’s a new phone,” Olivia said. “Who bought it for you?”

Ruth smiled proudly.

Olivia immediately looked at her husband.

Ruth laughed and said Aaron had insisted she have the best.

Olivia already suspected the truth.

She excused herself and went to the bedroom.

“I thought she’d enjoy it. Maybe she can play games on it.”

He immediately realized what Olivia was doing.

“You sent my laptop to my mom?”

Olivia crossed her arms.

“Why is it a problem when I spend money on your mother, but it wasn’t a problem when you secretly spent my money on her?”

Aaron finally admitted that he had taken the $3,000.

He claimed he planned to replace it, but he couldn’t say when.

Olivia was done making excuses for him.

“You took money without permission,” she said. “That is stealing, regardless of who you spent it on.”

She gave Aaron a folder containing their financial records, the bills she had covered while he was unemployed, and a new household budget.

“Your free ride is over,” she told him.

The next few days brought apologies from Aaron and angry calls from Ruth. Ruth insisted that Aaron had only wanted to do something nice for his mother.

Olivia calmly replied that he could have done that with his own money.

Something finally changed.

Aaron started applying for jobs seriously. He attended interviews, stopped spending his days gaming, and eventually found work within two weeks.

When he received his first paycheck, he placed it on the kitchen counter.

“I want to start paying you back,” he said.

“I know I broke your trust,” Aaron admitted.

And for the first time in a long time, Olivia felt that he was finally taking responsibility for his actions.
